There were two males in the family under the age of 16, one male between the ages of 16 and 45 and one male between the ages of 45 and 60. This gives us a total of seven people in the family. This means that four children were no longer living at home. By comparing the birth dates with the age catagories in the census we can conclude that John and James were two of these four. We can also assume that the other two children were probably girls who married and have assumed a different surname." History of the Trainor Family On Prince Edward Island 1839-1992 by Reg G. 1861 Census of lot 35 south has head of the household listed as Peter Beagan, blacksmith. Than that is crossed out and Owen's name is substituted and occupation is teacher. Owen has one girl under 5, one girl age 5 to 16, and one girl age 16 to 21. There are two males age 16 to 21 plus Owen. Owen is the only one listed as married and 1 death occured in the past year. The 3 oldest were born in Ireland and the 3 youngest in P.E.I.. One death has occured in the past year (baby John?) and all 6 are Roman Catholic. His rent is paid one half in produce and one half in currency. In the past year he harvested 9 bushels of wheat, 67 bushels of oats, 100 bushels of potatoes,25 yds of fulled cloth and 30 yds not fulled plus 30 lbs of butter. He has 1 horse, 4 neat cattle, 4 sheep and 1 hog. His neighbors are James Shepherd, Pat Sherry, Hugh Sherry, John McDonnell, W. McNally, William Koughan, Thomas McAdams, Pat Beagan, Justin McCarthy, Edward Trainor and Pat Woods.
The difficult part of this is explaining who the people are in this census. Owen is easy and we will call him #1, he is 34 and was born in Ire. The female under 5 must be Owen and Ann's daughter Margaret born in PEI which accounts for #2. The girl born in PEI between 5 and 16 should be John and Cecelia's daughter Mary Ann, #3. The only female that could be between 16 and 21 and born in Ire. would be Cecelia, John's wife #4. Of the two remaining one is probably Peter whose name was crossed off the census as head of household and could have been born in Ire, call him #5. That leaves an opening for a male between 16 and 21 born in PEI. Who that would be is a real question Mark. Even saying Peter is probably wrong because we have Peter Beagan's signiture on a land transfer in 1842, although I suppose that could have been his father. And the final question is where is Ann?
1861 The census of lot 35 records Patrick Bagen (Owen's brother) as a farmer from Ireland with a family of 6, all Roman Catholics. Two males under 5 years of age, 1 female under age 5, one male age 5 to 16, and Patrick and his wife are listed between the ages 16 to 45. He has 50 acres of which 15 are under cultivation. His lease is calling for one half annual rent and his land is rated as 2nd best. In the past year he harvested 22 bushels of wheat, 100 buahels of corn, 200 bushels of potatoes and 100 lbs of butter. He has 10 yds of fulled cloth and 40 yds not fulled. He owns 2 horses, 5 neat cattle, 10 sheep and 2 hogs. His neighbors are Hugh Sherry, Mrs McNally, William Houghan, Owen Beagan, James McAdams, Justin McCarthy, Edward Trainor, Patrick Woods, Michael Handrahan and Owen McAvinnia.

Hello there!
July 4, 1864 I'm just starting to research my dad's side of the family, which is all from P.E.I. (McKenna's, McDonald's, & Duffy's). Dad (Bernard Leo McKenna, but went by Leo all of his life) was born in P.E.I Feb. 13, 1898 (I was born in 1964; hope I inherited his energy). His father was John McKenna (b. July 4, 1864; d. Sept. 1937). John ran a grocery store in Charlottetown, was married to Mary McDonald of Bear River, & was mayor for a while (I think it was shortly after the turn of the century, but I'm not sure). John's dad was Bernard McKenna (b. CoMonaghan 1815, d. Tracadie Cross P.E.I. 1911 - hope I get his longevity). I'd like to find out more information about how/when the McKenna's (my branch, anyway) left Ireland; any suggestions? dave.mckenna@murraystate.edu
