Final Regular-Season 3A Class Individual Rankings

By The PREDICTOR

Kurt Lang

Well, heck. I’m way behind.  I wanted these to be out on Monday, and it’s Wednesday, and I should be doing other things.  Oh well, 3A is a real trip this year, and I don’t know how things will end up in Tacoma.  There are a few weight classes where one guy stands out, but several where you’ll do almost as weel to flip a coin as believe my guesses.  I love that.

I’m sure, as always, that there are some wrestlers I’ve overlooked.  If you want them recognized, send me their stats and information (wapredictor@hotmail.com) and I’ll see if I can make some revisions.

For those of you who have E-mailed me results, information, and opinions, my undying gratitude is yours.  I have been so terribly busy that I haven’t had a chance to do anything but keep the database up-to-date.  I apologize for not answering promptly, and I’ll try to catch up as soon as I can.

103

The top two on my list, Rogelio Diaz and Ricky Farmer, were both in 2A last season.  I guess it’s not such a big move to 3A…  Notice further down that I’ve made a special mention of Leilani Akiyama, the first female competitor to hold such an honor.  Akiyama lost a close match in the finals of the Liberty Inivtational, 12-10, to Scott Growden of Hazen.  She’s just a freshman, so we may see this Judo Champ on the top end of the list in the years to come.

Aaron Pedeferri’s only loss on the season is a DQ in the final at the Timberline Invitational—to Craig Fawcett.  These two guys are going to see each other again, I think, and settle things (for this year anyway--they’re only juniors).

This is a tough weight class for me to pick.  There were no absolute and obvious standouts, but lots of depth in the very-solid-wrestler ranks.  It’ll be a brawl in Tacoma.

Ditto what I said about the 130# class—no huge standouts, lots of depth.  Kyle Bounds, a Schoolboy Freestyle National Champ, hasn’t disappointed anyone in the southwest corner—except almost all of his opponents.

Colin Thorne has great positioning for the post-season.  He definitely has to watch out for Skylar Marler, who would like some hardware this year, and an out-of-state transfer from Virginia, Jimmy Vosler.  Vosler placed fifth in 2001 in Virginia, and they take wrestling very seriously there—look out.

This ought to be good.  Eight of the top-ten have been to state, and five have medals. Anthony Haukenberry and Tony Dorward might just have a date in the finals, but if I were on of them, I’d take things a little more slowly.  This weight will have a brutal quarterfinal round, and someone could get his dreams crushed.

Hans Gray lost to Johnny Wicker at the Skagit Invitational on a last-second escape, but came back a month later to handle Wicker in the dual 5-2.  They could meet three or more times before the season is over. Kasey White has been a pinning machine, catching everyone, including Tony Dorward, in what must be the best Head-and-Arm in the state.

Andy Andrews and Kyle Frawley squared off in the final of the White River Classic.  Andrews was coming off of an injury, and not in shape, and it showed in his loss, 13-6.  Nobody had better count out Adam Yohe.  If he wrestles at his potential, and stays healthy, he can beat anyone in the bracket.  Oh yeah, what about David Waters, who stepped up and won the Asics Sierra Nevada Classic?  It will be a dandy semi-final.

Wide-Open—that’s what 189# seems to be every year.  Lots of big guys graduate, and the others move to 215#, and then you get some guys who may not have been to the “Dome before, but they are darned sure are still good.  The best among them may be Chet Slevin, who sat out with a serious knee injury last season.  He could win lots more matches in the next couple of years.

There’s a little rock-paper-scissors thing going on at 215#. Keeney beat Keith 12-11, Keith came up big at the Sierra Nevada Classic and the Rainshadow Invitational, Seubert pinned Oswald, but lost to Boedecker.  I don’t know if Moore met any of them, and Oswald pinned Erlewine to win the Sundome Classic.  This is pretty much how the points shook out…
